Protecting Your Property With Termite Barriers

Australia is home to some of the most destructive termite species in the world. These pests quietly eat away at the wood in your floors and walls, often going undetected until they have caused serious damage.

Professionally installed termite barriers offer a higher level of termite control — by either blocking termites from entering your property or killing them as they attempt to breach boundaries. This prevents infestations from reaching your home and saves you from the costly repairs associated with termite damage.

At Hills Guardian, we apply both chemical and physical barriers that act as your hidden weapon against these silent destroyers — and the devastation they cause.

What Are Termite Barriers?

A termite barrier system is designed to prevent termites from infiltrating your property and reaching their favourite food source — the essential timber that holds your home together. There are two types:

Chemical Barriers

Chemical Barriers are termiticides applied to the soil — either directly or via a reticulation system (a system of underground pipes installed around your home).

Physical Barriers

Physical Barriers are typically installed during construction or as part of a major renovation project. They involve utilising protective ‘collars’ and treated termite membranes.

The Value of Termite Barrier Treatment

For property owners, a termite barrier system provides immense value — offering a crucial defence against an attack from termites. Ultimately, it protects one of the most significant investments you make.

With a termite barrier around your property, you:

Prevent structural damage — by stopping termites from reaching your home and devouring the ‘bones’ of your building.

Save yourself costly repairstermite damage is rarely covered by home insurance, and replacing damaged timber can cost you thousands of dollars.

Can deal with termite prevention without the stress — chemical treatments are quick and cost-effective. Physical barriers, once installed, require minimal maintenance.

Keep your defence against termites below ground — termite barriers attack subterranean (ground) termites where they live, with no interruptions to your view or outdoor area.

Shield your property from termites for many years — barriers are long-lasting.

Could potentially increase your property’s value — with a termite defence in place, typically your well-maintained home will be more appealing to buyers.

Gain peace of mind — by reducing the risk of an expensive and disruptive termite infestation.

Termite Barriers — Our Solutions

We offer physical and chemical termite barrier treatments for Sydney homes and businesses.

Termite Barriers for Existing Homes

If you’re in an established property, our team can look for signs of termites before applying a chemical termite barrier treatment. This is the ideal solution for houses that have been built without a physical termite barrier, or it can complement a physical barrier to provide the ultimate level of protection.

If your property has an existing reticulation system to support termite control, talk to Hills Guardian about checks and repairs.

Termite Barriers for New Builds and Property Upgrades

New Build Properties

A physical termite barrier is installed in the early stages of your new home build, as the concrete slab is being poured. The process involves wrapping all service penetrations — like plumbing pipes — with protective collars that we infuse with a termite-repellent termiticide.

After the slab is in place, our team steps in to install treated plastic sheeting (also referred to as a termite membrane) around the slab edge — forming a continuous shield. This dual-layer approach blocks termites from accessing the structure.

Renovations

During renovation projects, expansion foam barriers are used to ensure there are no gaps for termites to exploit between old and new concrete slabs. Your builder will connect with the Hills Guardian team to arrange barrier installation as part of the construction process.

Termidor Chemical Termite Barrier — How it Works

At Hills Guardian, we recommend Termidor because of its unique ‘transfer effect’ approach to termite prevention and extermination.

This is a liquid treatment applied to soil around and under your home or workplace, leaving an undetectable poison. Termites come into contact with it and transfer the chemical to others. It’s this chain reaction that makes Termidor so effective.

The Benefits of Termidor:

Can be applied before, during or after construction.

Sits beneath the surface so your children and pets are safe.

Long-term protection — lasts up to 8 years.

Use with or without a reticulation system.

Odourless — no unpleasant smell.

Minimal impact on the environment.

Termite Barriers FAQs

How Much Does a Termite Barrier Cost?

The cost of a termite barrier varies depending on factors like:

  • Your home’s or facility’s size.
  • Soil type.
  • Construction design.
  • Barrier system chosen.

Additionally, some properties are more at risk of infestation or reinfestation than others, and others have grounds that are hard to access. At Hills Guardian, our quotes are tailored to your exact requirements.

Do Termite Barriers Really Work?

Yes. When installed by licensed professionals and paired with routine inspections, termite barriers are one of the most effective ways to repel termites and stop invasions.

What’s the Best Chemical Termite Barrier for an Existing Home?

At Hills Guardian, we use and recommend Termidor as the most effective and reliable chemical barrier system.

How Long Does a Termite Barrier Last?

Chemical barriers typically offer protection from termites for five to eight years, depending on the product and environmental conditions. Physical barriers are able to protect a home or building for up to 50 years.

What Does Termite Barrier Installation Involve?

It depends on the system. For chemical barriers, soil can be treated directly, or chemicals can be applied through a reticulation system. For physical barriers, installation takes place during construction.

Are Termite Barriers Mandatory in NSW?

Fair Trading NSW explains that builders are responsible for providing a termite risk management (TRM) system during a new build or renovation project. At Hills Guardian, we coordinate with builders to install physical and chemical termite barriers.

Is Termite Barrier Treatment Safe for Pets and Kids?

Yes. We use products that are safe when applied professionally and according to the manufacturer’s directions.
